Knitted Wire Jewelry: Techniques. Projects. Inspiration

Knitted Wire Jewelry: Techniques. Projects. Inspiration

What I like most about KNITTED WIRE JEWELRY is that the finished pieces look like commercial jewelry, because they're made entirely of metal wire, sheet metal, and semiprecious stones. I purchased the book because I liked the necklace on the book's cover: that design is fairly representative of the pieces in the book.

This book is an excellent addition to a knitter's technical bookshelf. About one-third of the book is devoted to tools, choosing materials, wire knitting techniques, and knitted jewelry techniques (e.g., wrapping wire, adding beads, forming sheet metal, applying a patina). The techniques are explained step by step, and the steps are clearly illustrated with large full-color photos.

There are patterns for rings (5), earrings (6), bracelets (7), and necklaces (7). My favorite patterns are the Lily Necklace (the cover design), the Viking necklace, bracelet, and hoops (simple knitted metal cords), the Mixed-Link Bracelet (three sheet metal rectangles with knitted interiors, all linked together with knitted cords), the Leaf Earrings (a single leaf with wrapped-wire veins), and the Opal Rectangle Earrings (long, dangly strips with single pear-cut Peruvian Opals attached as pendants).

Probably I'll never actually make any of these pieces, but the book gives me all the information I need to create my own professional-looking wire jewelry based on knitting techniques. Two other good books on knitted wire jewelry are Nancie Wiseman's Knitting with Wire, and Annie Modesitt's Twist and Loop: Dozens of Jewelry Designs to Knit and Crochet with Wire. Of the three, I like KNITTED WIRE JEWELRY the best, because of the excellent photographs illustrating the techniques, and the elegant simplicity of the designs.

Everything you need to create wearable sculptures!

    • Step-by-step demonstrations of all the basic techniques needed to complete the projects: knitting, stitches, simple increases and decreases, stringing beads and more.
    • 25 projects -rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces - in a breathtaking range of styles.
    • Striking ways to incorporate other materials, including sheet metal, gemstones, silk, velvet and patinas for additional texture opportunities.
    • A simple wire-wrapping process for stronger, more wearable pieces.

This is really a very well explained guide and quite easy to follow. Instruments, tools, and materials are also exlpained, and there is a good deal of easy but impressive jewelry models. I don't rate it 5 only because I expected them to be more, but those available are also a good start for a beginner.
