My wife and I are jewelers. We manufacture our jewelry with gemstones such as diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires.
To get the best price we buy our precious stones in bulk and the price heavily depends upon the clarity, color, tone and saturation.
Unlike some other jewelers loupes this magnifier with LED light did a much more serious job at helping us identify the best stones for our customers. 6 LEDs are evenly distributed around the lens. This is a huge advantage compared to the slide-out loupes with LEDs on the side! LEDs evenly illuminate the stone underneath, so color and defects can be inspected better.
Usually I place stones on top of the table for examination and hold the loupe above it. There are never any shadows - LED light illuminates the surface even when I lean over the stones. Then my eye has to be an inch or two away from the lens to get the view in focus. Focal distance is a bit shorter than in 10X jewelers loupes, but magnification is two times higher.
The best part is the price paid for the value we received: we get a crisp and bright view of the whole stone including very small details. Viewing field is wider than with most other loupes at this price. You can see for yourself from the pictures I attached with the view (taken with smartphone).
We used it a lot so had to change the batteries once. It was easy as they are standard watch batteries available at most stores for less than one dollar a piece. Just ask for LR927 type.
We would definitely recommend this loupe to the professionals in our industry, however, it could also be useful for other tasks in everyday life - reading or examining anything that is hard to see by a naked eye.
My application is photography and publishing. Some reviewers complained that the objects are not in focus, in particular if you are looking at coins, stamps, or anything on a flat surface. This observation is true, but can be easily corrected by rotating the optics counterclockwise (holding the transparent plastic stationary) until perfect focus is obtained. All loupes behave this way; it is not a design flaw. The LEDs provide excellent illumination and now I cannot imagine using any product that does not have the uniform illumination provided by this kind of design. The power switch seems to be the only thing that might fail over time, and it is difficult to determine how well that part is designed/built. If you do not use frequently, remove the batteries after use.
Bought this for my husband who collects stamps. Some stamps have little dots unseen to the naked eye, and unable to see with a regular magnifying glass. This works GREAT!
I was expecting a cheap piece of plastic with a crappy light. Boy was I wrong!! This loupe is the frikkin jam!! Its super clear and the light is crazy bright. If this is what you need this is the one and Thomas is the dude to buy from!! Ill be back.
