I found that, when trying to stamp keys, a standard hammer was much harder to use than this Bastex one. I want to get the strike correct on the first shot (in order to get a crisp image), and I want a hammer that has a tight center-of-gravity so that I don't risk injuring myself.
This particular Bastex hammer is perfect for my needs and wasn't crazy expensive. The quality seems good enough to stand up to the occasional use that I will give it over the years.
It did take me a while to have the courage to give a strong whack on the first shot, but that's what key stamping requires. If the stamping die doesn't jump (it shouldn't!), then I often give two quick, strong hammer blows in succession. I've had no problems with crisp results.
By the way I combined this purchase with the "Impressart Steel Stamping Block, Small Size With Rubber Feet, 1 Piece, Steel" and the "Wokesi 3/32"(2.5Mm) High Hardness Carbon Steel Uppercase Number And Letter Ball Pein Hammer Hand Punch Metal Stamp Set." Both of these have worked well for me.
Love this hammer and how long it lasts. I use for my business everyday and it lasted through my busy months without breaking down. THis is the only brand I will use from now on, much better that the other 3 brands I have tried hands down.
Works well in my jewelry set up. The compact design is easy on storage space while providing neededstriking force for design. Good product at a fair price. Would recommend.
overall solid hammer, works well for it's intended purpose - metal jewelry stamping. I only docked it a star because it was a bit scuffed up when I received it. Doesn't affect it's function at all, I just wasn't expecting a new hammer to be scuffed up.
I didn't think there was much of a difference. A hammer is a hammer. Was I wrong! This one is weighted just right for stamping.

Feature Product
- GENERAL USAGE: The Brass 1 pound metal stamping hammer was designed for metal stamping. It has a smaller and scaled down grip designed for easy handling and precision striking. The 1 pound head and grooved grip helps to strike your metal stamps with the exact amount of force every single time. This hammer is great for the beginner and intermediate stamper. Also works great for flattening wire for jewelry making
- QUALITY: The brass head helps to prolong the life of your metal stamps by reducing wear and tear through each jewelry or customizing job. Sturdy and grooved grip allows for maximum and precise strikes. The head is firmly attached to the handle. Please note that brass hammers may flake when striking however this lengthens the life of the stamp by taking the brunt of the hammer blow.
- PRECISION: Because of it's scaled down grip and 1 pound brass head every strike will be more accurate resulting in a much better craft and customization of your jewelry or leather workings. Helps to prevent double impressions and protects the longevity of your stamps. Brass is much better than steel for metal stamping because it disperses the energy of the hit into the stamping blank.
- SIZE & DIMENSIONS: Hammer head is about 1 pound in weight and grip is about 7 inches in length.
- WARRANTY: Includes 30 day money back guarantee and 1 year replacement Warranty
Description
Striking metal stamps with a regular hammer or other tools not made specifically for metal stamping can take its toll on your artwork and the longevity of your stamps themselves. The Brass head of this hammer provides a soft but strong striking surface elimination double impressions. The one pound weight of the hammer's head also provides optimal weight for deep impressions. The hammer can be used on a standard work table but we highly suggest using a small anvil or steel bench block. Brass hammers may flake when striking however this lengthens the life of the stamp by taking the brunt of the hammer blow.
This is a great hammer!! It fits well and is the right size for stamping.
I ordered this to use for metal stamping for jewelry and it’s awesome! The short handle helps with aiming while hammering. And the brass head has made such a difference in the quality of my pieces. It’s so much easier to use than the hammer I used before. I would definitely recommend this product for hand-stamping.
The Bastex brass is a joy to use and it meets all of my stamping needs. I without reservation recommend this hammer.
Guess it's fine..got it for my grandson's graduation present. He's going to deisel mechanic school and will have to have his tools marked. (Not all I got him!).
Just the right price and having it delivered-priceless.
