Do you like playing around with dangerous chemicals at home? Enjoy dissolving metals in nitric acid to make pretty compounds and billowing clouds of toxic nitrogen dioxide gas? What about making a few drops of nitroglycerin and setting it off? Irritated by the fact that it's hard to find nitric acid being sold to amateurs?

Then you'll love this stuff! It's just concentrated nitric acid, probably the standard 68%. Perfect for someone who just wants a small amount to mess around with. You could use it to detect <14K gold (the intended purpose) because silver and copper among other alloying metals dissolve in it, but gold doesn't. If you do want to dissolve gold too, just combine it with cheap readily available hydrochloric (aka muriatic) acid and you've got aqua regia! Many metal nitrates make pretty colors: for instance, dropping a chip of cobalt into it makes a beautiful red, copper is blue, and nickel is green (takes longer but worth it). Somewhat dilute solutions generally work better for most metals, in particular silver, nickel, and aluminum, because this will avoid producing passivating oxide layers. You can also use it, often in combination with sulfuric acid, to nitrate organic compounds. The best example is using it to nitrate glycerin into nitroglycerin. There are many other reactions too. Nitric acid is a great oxidizer and a strong acid at the same time. Easily my favorite acid!

Safety tips: ventilation is critical because for many reactions including most dissolving metal ones, you'll be producing lots of nitrogen dioxide gas, which is highly toxic. Goggles and gloves are obviously essential too. Don't make more than a few drops of nitroglycerin at a time and wear earplugs when setting it off.
