Even with that, I felt it looked cheap. There's little to explain what everything does, how to center, how to convert images, and even how to focus the laser. But, it's not rocket science. I started off doing a burning a day on cheap wood coins I purchased and within the week I felt I had mastered the 80% needed to burn on highly-expensive items.
I use this device often. Sometimes when I just want to burn something funny into a wooden doubloon, but also when I want to mark some plastic/wood/leather with a highly personalized and friendly logo.
If you're a crafty kind of person, this is a great buy! I keep mine hooked up and ready to go for entertainment!
If you're looking for heavy hand-holding, this probably isn't the device for you.
Tested on Mac and Windows, burned wood on many surfaces, and I love the results.
Arrived fast. I had trouble with the software but after three reboots it installed. Instructions are short and vague. No tips or advice. Going to be a lot of trial and error. It is addictive. Doesn't advise on proper way to cool down the laser without losing progress. Machine is a 5 star. Shipping is a 5 star. Software is a 4, it's on a thumb drive, tips and advice are a 2 this is going to be a lot of trial and error. No advice on power settings and material or what some buttons do in the software. Still happy with it.
After reading some reviews I was hesitant but decided to go for it anyway - and I am happy that I did it. The software is quite basic and easy to use and the laser works normally. I am using it to engrave wood and it’s taking me a couple of tentatives to get exactly what I am looking for. So, overall I think this is pretty hard to beat from a cost/benefit perspective.
Works pretty good for a cheaper laser. I have done a lot of Ar & pistol mags with it and some painted metal also.
the directions are simple but very generic. the engraver works wonderful but you must experiment with power settings to get a clean etch. Overall i very pleased with this unit

How to Start device to work?
1. First Copy all files in USB DISK and save to your PC. This is important to use machine later.
2. There are 3 file folders in USB DISK: MAC, WIN, Picture.
Select to click "MAC" or "WIN" according to your PC operating system.
3. For MAC system, Pls open file folder of "CH341SER_MAC", Double Click File of "CH34x_Install_V1.4.pkg" to install driver.
And For WIN system, Pls double click file of "driver".
4. Link Power Cable Line to power outlet and USB Data Line to PC.
5. Open file of Software in Folder of MAC or WIN to start work.
Pls note:
Don't Touch the Device and Engraving Material to any movement, Keep their Still when working.

The machine was easy enough to set up even though I did go through a lot of frustration until it all came together. But I'm afraid my learning curve is going to be pretty steep since I really don't know which settings to tweak to fix the problems that I have. I'd like to make the etching more detailed but it's coming out pretty dark. Well, it's still a cool machine and I'll be happy to play with it. We want to etch cedar coasters for my son's wedding so it'll probs be just text anyway. Shipping: SUPER FAST and super well-packaged. This'll be a neat thing to play with - I'm really glad we bought it but I'd love it if it came with better instructions that go beyond setup.
product was well packaged and worked as advertised, laser head can be a bit tricky to adjust to certain materials and thicknesses but not difficult to do i just use some 3x2 Duratec Positioning Squares to help with height on certain items, just make sure to use in a well ventilated area when the laser is burning as the item being engraved can get quite smokey especially soft materials like rubber or soft plastic, having a cutting mat helps with Positioning of the item to be engraved , does not work with gloss white pvc cards unless marked with a dry erase marker or a light coat of paint
Be careful with this. My first engraving went totally through the wood & into my desk. If I was to have a complaint it would be that there is no on/off switch, so you have to unplug it each time. For some reason my computer tells me the software is Malware.
It works! The nickel in the picture is one inch, and the text is readable.
My only quibble is that it's a pain to align the laser with the material, if you want the engraving close to the edge. Even with that, I am happy with this purchase!
Nice product. Disappointed that you are limited to wood, learher, etc. No metal.... Not the easiest to figure out for novices. No real owners or operation manual to speak of.
